Friday: The Best Day of My Daughter's Life

By Dr. Steve Sjuggerud
Wednesday, March 31, 2010

When Friday was over, my daughter said it was the best day of her life...

My friend Porter Stansberry gave his compelling speech that night. But my daughter was already fast asleep, tired from a long day of cave tubing, climbing Mayan ruins, and more... all in the jungles of Belize.

A warning upfront today: We don't do this often, but today's DailyWealth has nothing to do with investing. If you're looking for a hot stock tip, you can stop reading right now. Instead, today's essay is about living life...

We got "off the grid" on Friday as a family and had a day trip in Belize that I'd highly recommend to you, if you're up for a little adventure.

My wife thought "cave tubing" was the highlight of the day – and one of the best little life adventures she's ever had. Cave tubing doesn't sound like much... You drift through underground caves sitting on an innertube, wearing a spelunker's light on your head. But it really is something special...

It starts with a 20-minute walk through the rainforest to get to the starting point. (That way you can drift back to your car.) The rainforest walk itself was a wonderful adventure... and not at all what I expected. For example, the forest was the least humid and coolest outdoor spot in Belize. The canopy blocks the much of the heat, so it's practically air-conditioned. Our guide pointed out all kinds of plants and animals, and we ate some plants right off the vine.

Once we got in the water, we immediately entered a massive cave – that was pitch black. When we turned our headlamps on, the walls glittered with crystals, stalactites, and wild natural formations. All you have to do is kick back and enjoy the show.

Moving on, we also visited the Mayan ruins at Altun Ha that day...

I was surprised they actually let you climb the ruins... In America, everything is roped off – you can look, but you can't touch. In other countries, they're not so worried about lawsuits and such.

I remember in Iceland, for example, there were no guardrails... You could easily fall into a massive waterfall or horribly burn yourself at a boiling geyser, if you didn't use common sense. In America, we put up guardrails and passively take pictures. In Belize you can be a part of it... We stood 60 feet above the jungle, on top of a Mayan temple that was built before Christ. Our local guide explained Mayan culture to us, while our kids roamed the temple hallways.

We crammed a lot in this day (we had two other tourist stops) before flying back to the island of Ambergris Caye in time for Porter's speech.

The fun continued the next morning. I gave a speech to the crowd and then I sneaked out... The family headed out to a fantastic snorkel trip at Hol Chan reef, a 10-minute boat ride from where we stayed. In addition to all the colorful little fish on the reef, we bumped up against grouper and stingrays as big as my 9-year-old son. He loved it!

I've been extremely fortunate to see a lot of the world. From north (Iceland) to south (New Zealand), my kids have experienced a lot too. So for my daughter to call this "the best day ever" – that's saying something. Everyone loved it. You ought to consider it, too.

Belize is an easy trip for Americans... and you can cram a lot of adventures that you can't do in the States into a quick trip down. If you're looking for five-star pampering, it's not the place for you. But if you want adventure, then you can keep busy for days here. I recommend staying out on Ambergris Caye.

Plan a getaway for next year... preferably in January or February... so you can get a sunburn out on the water while everyone back home is shoveling snow.

Best regards,

Steve

Market Notes

AN IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENT IN COPPER PRICES

Like the 10-year note we mentioned yesterday, our friend Dr. Copper just made a dramatic "pop" higher.

Copper is a vital ingredient in cars, power lines, refrigerators, plumbing, and electronics, so its price is an excellent indicator of global economic health. The metal enjoyed a huge rally in 2009 as governments around the world "reflated" their struggling economies with cheap credit. Over a month ago, we ran a chart of copper and noted the metal's huge run higher looked to be ending. This week, however, copper staged an enormous jump to reach a new 52-week high.

Like the soaring shares of restaurants and Home Depot, the big move higher in copper shows the government's monstrous "E-Z-Credit" program is working right now. Demand for just about everything is increasing... and taking copper, restaurant profits, and home-improvement shares higher.

We'll say it again: Sure, the U.S. economy has terrible problems right now. Government debt and government debt are the two biggest. But until the charts of things like copper start to break down, we can only stand back in amazement and say, "Well done Bernanke, Geithner, and Obama, you've made spenders and speculators out of us all."
